Iran's Deya Dam has caused severe humanitarian disasters in various areas including Iraq's Kurdistan

Both the Sirwan and Little Jab rivers in Darbandikhan and Dukan regions have been dammed. These two rivers are one of the sources of Kurdistan's water needs. If Iran continues to reduce the supply of water, the ongoing threat will become more pronounced. The citizens of Kurdistan, Iraq, have been deprived of their fair share of water for decades. Experts say their suffering has now reached extreme levels. Iran has built dams on the two main rivers that supply water to Kurdistan.

The course of the river has also changed along with the stoppage of water supply. The livelihood of 2 million people in that region is in danger. The balance of public life and environment will stop. Rahman Khani, director of Darbandikhan, gave this information to Middle East IK.
Iran has been continuously reducing water supply to Iraq for the past three years. As a result, the agriculture sector is severely affected, creating an acute water crisis.

Iraqi officials said last month that Tehran had significantly cut water supplies from the Sirwan and Little Jab rivers to Iraq's northeastern region. Khani said agriculture, fisheries, drinking water, tourism and electricity for two million people in Halabja, Sulaimaniyah, Garmiya districts and Diyala provinces. Production depends on those two rivers.

Over the years, river dam projects have not only made people's lives miserable; Thousands of people have been forced to migrate elsewhere. Besides, there are impacts on agriculture, biodiversity and tourism. Khani said. Last month, Iran provided 75 to 80 percent less water. Reducing water by 15 cubic meters per day. That is less than 6 meters from this time last year. Due to the construction of 16 dams on the Sirwan river, the water flow has decreased. A larger dam project was constructed in 2018 in Darian, Kermanshah province. Which is located 28 km away from the border of Iraq.

In 2016, the Save the Tigress campaign said in a study that the Darian dam could hold 340 million cubic meters of water. It is warned that it is a threat to the entire region, including Iraq. Darbandikhan Dam is located on the Sirwan River, 65 km from Sulaimaniyah in the south-east. which originates in the Jageros Mountains of Iran and ends in the Tigris River southeast of Baghdad. The water storage capacity of that dam is 3 million cubic meters. Which was used in agriculture, hydropower production.

Iran says the purpose of building these dams is to develop hydropower and agriculture in the country's southwestern region. Last year, Iran's Water Resources Management Company announced plans to build 109 new dams by 2021.
