Aung San Suu Kyi has been excluded from the 'Sakharov Prize Community' by the European Parliament (EP). Al Jazeera reported that the decision was taken because it supports state persecution against the Rohingya population.
The EP awarded the Sakharov Prize to Suu Kyi in 1990, a year before she received the Nobel Peace Prize. It is considered as the highest award for those fighting for human rights.
But now Suu Kyi will not be able to participate in any of the awards ceremony.
Suu Kyi was awarded the Sakharov Prize for her work before 1990. He was removed from the list yesterday as it was not possible to withdraw the award due to the circumstances. This is the strongest restriction of EP.
In 2017, more than 700,000 people of the Rohingya community fled to Bangladesh in the face of persecution by the Myanmar army.
UN investigators concluded in their report that the operation was carried out with genocidal intent.
Allegations of genocide and military-led persecution have been denied. They have been claiming that this operation was conducted to protect the country from Rohingya militants.
In a speech to the International Criminal Court (ICJ) in December, Suu Kyi expressed her support for the Myanmar military accused of genocide. In his 30-minute speech, there were 3,379 words, but he never uttered Rohingya.
