The owners want to keep the garment factories open despite the strict lockdown that will start from July 1 to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said that a decision will be given in this regard from the cabinet department after evening.
He gave this information in response to a question from journalists in an event at the secretariat on Tuesday.
The commerce minister said that the owners want to keep the garments open following all the rules and regulations during the lockdown. The workers in this sector leave their homes and go straight to the factory.
When they enter the factory, they are checked for physical condition. Their hands are sanitized, masks are worn. Again they returned home in the same way. As a result, they have very little opportunity to mix with other sections of the society.
According to the information provided by the owners, the prevalence of the disease among those working in the garment sector is very low. As we have maintained their logic, products will go abroad which is necessary for the interest of the nation.
Eid is coming, there is the matter of salary and bonus. The biggest thing they are saying which we may need to take into consideration is that if we give leave to 4 million workers today, we could not keep these workers in or around Dhaka because of the past experience. Keeping them safe may reduce the spread. They presented these logics.
Hinting that garment factories may be kept open in compliance with the restrictions, the minister said, since we have decided that the products will go abroad, besides Eid is coming, there is the matter of salary and bonus. "The owners have said something, which we may need to take into consideration," he added.
