52 dead bodies have been recovered from the factory in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj in Sejan juice factory of Sajib Group. Among them, 49 bodies were recovered from the fourth floor of the factory.
The fire service said the fourth floor was locked. Due to which the workers working there could not come out. The fire took their lives.
A fire broke out in the Rupganj factory after 5:30 pm on Thursday. The fire was brought under control around 12:30 pm on Friday after 19 hours with the efforts of 18 units of the fire service. Earlier, the fire service started searching the factory from Friday morning. And at this time, 49 bodies were recovered from the fourth floor.
Several officials of the fire service working at the scene said that there are two ladders to climb to the roof of the six-storey factory. The staircase leading from the fourth floor to the roof was locked. Although the stairs from the fourth floor were open, there was no chance to go down due to the fierce fire below. Going down that ladder means jumping into the fire.
In this situation, the workers could not go down. On the other hand, the workers could not even go to the roof as the stairs to go up were locked. They had to surrender helplessly to the flames. If the ladder to the roof was open, maybe they could have gone to the roof and taken shelter. In that case it might have been possible to rescue them from the roof.
Debashish Vardhan, deputy director of the fire service at the scene, told reporters that we rescued 25 people from the roof using a ladder in the car. If the other workers also got a chance to get on the roof, we could bring them down from the roof. But the fourth floor workers did not get that opportunity.
Workers and eyewitnesses said that about 7,000 workers work in Sejan Juice factory in Karngop area. The fire started suddenly from a carton on the ground floor of the factory in a seven-storey building. Within minutes, the fire spread throughout the building. At this time, the factory became dark due to black smoke.
