Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh does not want to engage in war with anyone. But if someone comes to attack, the armed forces must acquire the capability to respond appropriately.
He said these things while officially inaugurating five new modern ships including warships of the Navy in Chittagong in a video conference from Ganobhaban on Thursday morning.
At this time, he said, today the Bangladesh Navy took another step forward in its continuous progress. The day is very glorious not only for the Bangladesh Navy, but for the entire country and nation.
As a result of this commissioning, two new modern frigates Banauja Omar Farooq, Abu Ubaidah and a corvette warship Pradishna and two survey ships Banauja Bahira and Talashi began operational activities in protecting the territorial waters of Bangladesh and increasing the capabilities of the navy.
Earlier, Naval Chief Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal handed over the commissioning order to the captains of the ships on behalf of the Prime Minister at the Banouja Isa Khan Naval Jetty in Chittagong.
Later, the Prime Minister formally unveiled the nameplate as per the naval tradition. A guard of honor was also given by a well-armed navy team on the occasion.
In his speech, the Prime Minister also said that it is our firm belief that two frigates equipped with modern weapons and a modern corvette and two modern survey ships built in our own Khulna Shipyard will strengthen the power of the Navy to protect the sovereignty of Bangladesh. In the light of Forces Goal 2030, the present government is always sincere and committed to the development of the Navy.
The Navy's two newly commissioned frigates 'Omar Farooq' and 'Abu Ubaidah' are each 112 meters long and 12.4 meters wide, and the corvette Banauja is expected to be 90 meters long and 11.14 meters wide.
