People have started leaving Dhaka early on the news that there may be an announcement of shutdown across the country to prevent corona infection. This Friday morning, people flocked to the entrance of the capital.
Common people are rushing to their destination paying several times higher fares as the bus is closed. Every vehicle has to pass through police checkpoints.
No vehicle is allowed to enter or leave Dhaka except for urgent needs. Due to this, the pressure of passengers has also increased on Shimulia-Banglabazar sea route.
From Friday morning, the pressure of passengers going to South Bengal has been seen at Naurut and Dhaka bus stand.
Gabtali area is one of the gateways to enter and exit Dhaka on Friday morning.
Thousands of men and women are running around ignoring the lockdown. Many don't even have masks on their faces. If you ask, there are many excuses. They are leaving the capital early after hearing about the shutdown.
The same situation as the road has been seen in the waterways. People are running separately towards South Bengal through Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. Due to the shortage of vehicles on the road, they are going to Shimulia Ghat in different small vehicles and motorcycles.
There is also a shortage of boats on the waterways. Passengers from a few spots in Laujung and Srinagar are crossing the Padma river at great risk in these trawlers.
There are now 14 ferries operating at Shimulia Ghat. As per the lockdown rules, ferries are barred from crossing anything except vehicles carrying patients and vehicles transporting emergency goods.
Despite the ban on the movement of people, passengers are crowding the ghat.
Zakir Hossain, in-charge of Mawa Traffic Police, said that a check post has been installed at the entrance of Shimulia Ghat. Attempts are being made to prevent passengers from coming to the ghat.
BIWTC supervisor Shahabuddin said that due to high passenger pressure on the Shimuliya route, two hundred vehicles were crossed from Friday morning to 10 am. Apart from this, hundreds of big cars are waiting.
Munshiganj Sadar traffic police in-charge Bajlur Rahman said that checkposts have been increased in the district. Vehicular traffic is being blocked in the city. Apart from this, some autorickshaws have been seized. The launch movement of Narayanganj and Munshiganj is closed.
