Today, June 23, is the 72nd founding anniversary of Awami League. On this day in 1949, one of the oldest and traditional groups of the subcontinent was born in a historic context in the Rose Garden of Old Dhaka in a completely democratic manner.
Awami League has been in power for three consecutive terms. The party made important contributions at every stage of nation-building—in every phase of the freedom movement.
Initially started as Awami Muslim League, but later dropped the word 'Muslim' and expanded as a non-communal organization.
At the beginning of its establishment, the party was led by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Shamsul Haque.
Two decades after its birth, Awami League's major achievement was the independence of the country through the great liberation war under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. That's why these three names 'Bangabandhu, Awami League and Bangladesh' are based on the same sources in history.
Awami League is the mainstream of Bengali nationalism. Awami League is the image of struggling people. The party has proved its indispensability in the politics of the subcontinent for more than seven decades.
The role of Awami League is bright in every movement and struggle of this country. Awami League has the honor of winning the language movement of fifty-two, the student movement of sixty-two, the six-point movement of sixty-six, the mass uprising of sixty-nine, the landmark election of seventies, the liberation war of seventy-one and the anti-dictatorship movement.
After the independence of the country, when the war-torn Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangabandhu was moving forward in the struggle for economic liberation, the assassins struck. On August 15, 1975, the father of the nation was killed in his family. Bangabandhu's daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived because they were abroad.
In 1981, Sheikh Hasina was elected as the president of Awami League. Since then he has been the president. In 2019, he was elected president of the 21st National Council of the party.
President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave a message on the occasion of the founding anniversary of Awami League. He extended his sincere greetings and congratulations to the countrymen including countless leaders, supporters, well-wishers of the organization. In the speech, he respectfully remembered the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other national leaders.
Due to the corona epidemic, Awami League has taken appropriate programs in compliance with the health protection rules on a limited scale to celebrate the day. There is a discussion meeting at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue at 4 pm. It will be chaired by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He will join the program through video conference.
