A worker of the branch Chhatra League has been accused of beating up a shopkeeper of Rajshahi University for not giving away cigarettes.
The beating took place at the campus food corner in Paribahan Market of the university on Thursday night around 7:30 pm.
The victim alleged that he was beaten up because he did not give him a cigarette. The accused is a student of the 2016-17 session of the Department of Persian Language and Literature of Sheikh Siam University.
Shah Alam (47), the victim of the beating, is the proprietor of the campus food corner of Paribahan Market of the university.
Shopkeeper Alam said that around 7:30 in the evening, a BCL worker came to him for cigarettes. He said, if you want to buy cigarettes, you have to pay first. I won't smoke the rest.
After saying this, there was an argument with him. Later some others led by Siam came and beat me inside the shop.
Besides, the table-chairs of my shop were thrown on the ground. He also said that in his shop, BCL leaders and activists used to eat tea and cigarettes. Many of them have not yet paid the money. They later refused to return the money as it was not possible to write it down.
He also said that there was no solution after reporting the matter to the president and secretary of BCL several times. There were three other BCL workers with Sheikh Siam at the time of the beating. Their names have not been identified. However, they are said to be followers of Chhatra League General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu. When accused Siam was asked about this, he said that the matter of beating is false.
The shopkeeper is making up such false stories to get mercy. Faisal Ahmed Runu, general secretary of the university's branch Chhatra League, said that this incident happened due to a misunderstanding. I later resolved the matter with the President.
