DNCC's regionally coordinated operation (CRUSH programme) which started last Monday to control the Culex mosquito continued for the third day on Wednesday. Today the operation was conducted in Karwan Bazar (Zone-5) area.
DNCC Mayor visited Mohammadpur Ring Road, Shia Masjid area, Ramchandrapur Canal and adjoining area for mosquito eradication operation at 8 am. After visiting Mohammadpur at 12 o'clock, he left to inspect mosquito control activities in ward number 28.
A little further along the opposite side of the Shyamoli cinema hall, it was seen that traffic was being obstructed due to the illegal construction of a shop at a road junction. Atiqul Islam got down from the car and observed the illegal shops and ordered them to be demolished immediately.
From there towards Agargaon Kalyanpur 'C' canal can be seen. Illegally constructed temporary shops on the walkways on both sides of the canal and even on the canal itself. Some such shops were immediately closed on the orders of the mayor.
Agargaon 60 feet along the canal towards Samaj Kalyan Mor, at one point the walking path along the canal is blocked. 40 feet canal becomes only 2 feet.
The remaining 38 feet of canal and 16 feet of walkway are filled with earth and lined with tin. The area is approximately 15 khata. It became clear to the mayor that the canal and the walkway were illegally occupied and bordered by tin.
The tin fence was immediately removed on the orders of the Mayor. Inside there is a vegetable garden and three small tin houses. On the orders of Atiqul Islam, all illegal structures were immediately removed.
An excavator was near the scene. Atiqul decided to bring it along with Islam. Then started the operation to rescue the illegally occupied canals and walkways.
About 10 feet were excavated till 4 pm. Excavation of this rescued canal will continue tomorrow.
Atiqul Islam said at this time, where we are standing is the place of the canal. A belayet has occupied this place by filling it with earth. As a result, waterlogging is created here, waist water. Because water cannot pass through the canal.
We are currently digging this canal with excavators. But the fact that we are occupying this canal, causing suffering to the people, cannot be allowed to happen. The Father of the Nation gave his historic speech this March.
We made the country free in exchange of blood. Let us liberate the canal wherever it is occupied by the people, taking the future generations with us. He also said that this canal is a fertile ground for mosquito production. Political leaders and activists are also helping us in this work.
People from all walks of life of this area, political leaders, home owners association, various societies have all applauded this initiative. One has taken over, all are suffering because of this one. Today the people of this area are very happy.
Incidentally, the water flow in this canal was stopped for so long due to encroachment of the canal and walking space at this place. A little rain would cause waterlogging here. This stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for insects and mosquitoes. Numerous mosquito larvae are found in canal water.
The people of the area were so happy with Mayor Atiqul Islam for rescuing and digging the canal that immediately a small gathering cheered with clapping and speeches.
Coordinated operation will be conducted tomorrow in Mohakhali region (Zone-3) to control Culex mosquitoes. The campaign will continue till March 16 except Friday.
