Rangpur Metropolitan Police has arrested five youths for spreading rumors about coronavirus on Facebook. Those arrested have been sent to jail.
The arrested are Asik Sardar (20), Aktaruzzaman (24), Akibuzzaman Angkan (20), Tanjilur Rahman Tamis (23) and Samir Ghosh Dipta (23).
This information was confirmed by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Alim Mahmud in a press conference organized at Rangpur DB office on Saturday afternoon, April 4.
He said that the Intelligence Unit (DB) of the Metropolitan Police arrested five youths in raids on GL Roy Road and Sundarganj area of Rangpur city on Friday night on charges of spreading rumors on Facebook. The accused youths misled the city residents and the administration by spreading false information on Facebook. They mentioned in a post, 'Today at 9 pm, one Saudi expatriate died due to corona infection in Dhap area of Rangpur city. Police have cordoned off the area. The step area can be locked down at any time. Step people beware. The rumored post quickly spread on Facebook and was shared. This caused a negative reaction in the public mind. In this incident, the five youths were arrested on Friday night under the leadership of DB Police Deputy Commissioner Uttam Kumar Pathak.
