101 pro-BNP lawyers of the Supreme Court have appealed to the President demanding the constitution of the Supreme Judicial Council to investigate allegations of corruption and misconduct against election commissioners including the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and take action as per the constitution.
Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan told reporters that the petition signed by 101 lawyers, including former secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association and former member of parliament Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, former secretary Barrister Badruddoza Badal, former member of parliament Advocate Syeda Ashifa Ashrafi Papia, has reached the President's office on Tuesday afternoon.
In the application, they said that the Election Commission is a constitutional institution. But unfortunately the current Election Commission has failed to fulfill its assigned responsibilities and duties.
By abusing power and sharing money with fancy tricks, they have become institutions to profit themselves.
According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, these serious immoral and financial misconducts are impeachable offenses while holding constitutional positions. The matter needs to be addressed through a proper investigation.
According to the petition, according to 118 (5) of the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners accused of corrupt and serious misconduct should be removed through investigation by forming the Supreme Judicial Council immediately.
For this reason, they strongly demanded that the present chief election commissioner should be prevented from performing his duties during the investigation period and an election commissioner should be given responsibility to perform his duties during the investigation period.
